TFREAX is a fast paced shoot-em up, adding new twists to a familiar theme. There are versions for the C64, C16, Vic20, Atari 400/800, ZX Spectrum, MSDOS, or Windows/Linux via SDL. The Vic20 version is just 3k!

The executables are in the "tfreax" sub-folder.

Controls (or use Joystick):

  SHIFT = Fire.

  I,P = Move Left/Right.

  X = Quit game.

As each level progresses, the aliens become faster. The lines of aliens move in different directions and patterns, depending on level. If you clear the aliens, you progress to the next level.

You get a bonus life every 8 levels, and the aliens go back to the top, but the aliens are faster.

Each alien scores 10 points on level 1, 20 on level two, 30 on 3, and so on.

The purple aliens require 2 shots to kill. At random intervals a special bonus blue alien sweeps across the top. If you shoot it, you get 160xlevel points, and the aliens are held on the same line for 5 sweeps.

The top line shows the score, the alien wave #, and number of lives left. The maximum score possible is 655350.

During play hit S to toggle sound, X to quit.

In the title screen, you can hit M to select alien start speed (0-7).  If you add +8 to the mode, it plays a "Classic" game, with the aliens moving the same direction.

For example mode 10 is speed 2, with classic motion.  If you want an insane game, try mode 6!

For C64, C16 & ZX, you can select Joystick #1 or #2.

For the ZX the first joystick is Sinclair i/f #1, the second the Kempstone joystick.

The ZX sound uses the AY8912 chip in the Spectrum 128, running the program in 48K mode.

Hints/Technical

Try not to leave the purple alien to last, its the hardest to hit. Try to remove aliens so that they all travel in one direction.

This program is a rework of my original Freax asm game for the c64, rewriting it for C/VTDL.

The download  file tfreax209s.zip has the 8bit program files, and the source.

The file tfreax209bin.zip has Linux and Dos exe.

The source code is included in the "tfreax" subfolder. For more details on compiling TFREAX, and on VTDL, see "vtdl.txt" in the tdl folder.

Enjoy!
